Visibility of Women of Colour in SlutWalk London
The idea for our meeting grew out of SlutWalk 2011 which some of us took part in. When we heard of SlutWalks happening around the world, in Brazil, Costa Rica, India and Morocco we knew that many women of colour were involved, including immigrant women seeking asylum inthe UK and sex workers. But this was hidden by the media. We intend to be vocal and visible in SlutWalk 2012. Why should we meet...

International Day Against Victim-Blaming!
To celebrate the birthday of SlutWalk… It’s International Day Against Victim-Blaming! From Toronto: “On April 3rd, 2011 the first SlutWalk event took place in Toronto, Canada. Inspired and influenced by powerful anti-violence efforts that came before us, SlutWalk aimed to fight against victim-blaming as a pervasive experience of sexual violence. It began in Toronto, Canada but quickly...

To avoid being victimised, don't dress like sluts?... →
slut-shaming: It may interest you to know that rape and dress sense aren’t linked at all.   When most people are raped by someone they knew (85.7%, sometimes found to be higher, depending on study) then dressing differently or more conservatively isn’t a preventative measure at all. You’re speaking of the much much smaller number of stranger-rape cases, and in those cases, if you look at this...

Vigil and Lobby against Welfare Reform Bill
Please join Single Mothers’ Self Defence and WinVisible (Women With Visible and Invisible Disabilities) at their vigil and lobby of parliament against the Welfare Reform Bill. On Tuesday the Welfare Reform Bill is being debated in the House of Lords. This is a vital opportunity to persuade the Lords to make key amendments which could stop some of the most harmful aspects of the bill. 1-3pm,...

Slut Means Speak Up are making a film against...
The Slutwalk London team are making a film to change attitudes about sexual assault, counter victim-blaming and provide legal and practical advice for rape survivors. The current ‘advice’ given to women by the police and teachers focuses on our behaviour: not to go out by ourselves, get drunk or wear ‘slutty’ clothes. We are looking for people who have experienced sexual assault to come...

Run a student group? Want to challenge...
Don’t alienate, educate. Not everyone identifies as a feminist, or actively tackles sexism. Many people don’t know what feminism really is. If you feel people at your university/college don’t understand feminism, don’t allow yourself to become a clique – hold discussions, organise meetings, and make sure the message is out there: ‘if you don’t like sexism, you’re welcome here’. Be inclusive,...

The charges against Sheila Farmer have been...
Ms Farmer’s trial was thrown out because of police and prosecution incompetence – witnesses had not been asked to attend court and a key witness could not be found. Ms Farmer has attended court six times and the case has been listed to start on two previous occasions. (from a statement by the English Collective of Prostitutes). Sheila has written in the Guardian today: Life is hard enough for...

A disabled sexual assault survivor speaks out: "I...
[trigger warning: description of sexual assault] It was a Sunday, at about 5pm in 2003, at Derby station, and I was waiting on a platform when I clocked a guy walk past me a few times. I remember thinking it was odd because it was like he was literally circling me, and he was quite close. Typically British I didn’t really think anything of it, and thought that when the train got in, I...

Announcing SlutWalk London 2012
Slutwalk London: The radical notion that nobody deserves to be raped. On 11th June 2011, SlutWalk came to London. Thousands of people of all races, genders, sexualities, classes and occupations came together to protest the silencing of our voices, the repression of our choices and the violence against our bodies. The word ‘slut’ carries a history of assault, shaming, insults and degradation,...

We made it very clearly we weren't interested and carried on walking. He followed us. After making in clear once again that I wasn't going to sleep with him, he let us walk away, instead throwing a glass bottle at my head. When I turned round and confronted him, all he...

We’ve made a model letter for you to send to the individuals mentioned in the last post, if you want some guidance. We recommend adding some personal input, however, as template letters become quickly identifiable and can be dismissed. We’ve also put the choice between ‘implement’ and ‘support’ in the first sentence. This is because, while Lynne Featherstone,...

Account of Slutwalk London
At three-something-ish on Saturday afternoon, I was in Trafalgar Square, chatting to the speakers from the ECP, looking round to say hi to Laurie Penny, and generally having a good time.  As I chatted,  I realised, to my dismay, that Roz Kaveney, who had been due to provide a message of support and solidarity from the trans community, was unwell and couldn’t make it.  That felt wrong: we, too, are...

ATTENTION ALL SLUTWALKERS!!
What a brilliant day and what a brilliant crowd you all were! It’s a shame that much of the press has forgotten totally to mention the message - you would think that they WANT to keep rape mythology alive and kicking.   We really need YOUR help on this one.   We need as many of you as possible to comment and lodge complaints about reporting standards and the fact that NO mention was...

Fiery Redheads
When I was 18, I had three days in a row where different older men were sexually inappropriate towards me. This behaviour included a humiliating comment by a teacher in front of my class and one man simply approaching me, staring and rubbing his groin in a cafe. I love my Mum but when I told her afterwards, her reaction was to gently suggest that my dyed red hair might give men the impression I...

Yes means Yes, No means No: Protect All Rape... →
Slutwalk will not be over after the walk tomorrow. We will be returning as ‘Slut Means Speak Up’ and campaigning on various issues. This is one of them. Please sign the petition and share it around. Over 90% of rapes are never reported to police. Of those reported, only 6.7% result in convictions. While most rapists get away with it and are free to rape again, women who report rape...

Elane: Why I Am Marching
I am marching/stewarding because I hate the word slut and all it’s connotations of blaming women for sexism and sexual violence. We are not sluts we are women who can dress as we please, go where we please, have sex as we please, with whom we please and how we please without becoming sexually available or dehumanised. I’m determined that we will have a world where women are equal and free and...
